27/06/2024A Residence Permit is a document that identifies your residence in China. It’s similar to a house registration in Thailand, but to keep it with yourself. Students with an X1 visa or long-term residents must apply for this document within 30 days of the date of entry. The advantage of a Residence Permit is that you can use it to enter and exit without having to apply for a new visa.
To apply for a Resident Permit must be done after receiving the results of a health examination. You must contact the Exit-Entry Administration Division or 出入境接待厅 of each city where you reside, which is open only Monday – Friday during Chinese official hours.
Required documents:
- 2-inch photos, white background
- Valid passport
- Admission notice
- JW201/JW202
- Health examination result report
- 4 documents given from host university

Resident Permit Application Process
- Inform your counselor that you will go to apply for a Resident Permit so that 4 documents will be issued. Check the information to make sure it is correct.
- Go to the Exit-Entry Administration Division or 出入境接待厅 of each cities where you reside.
- Submit the documents to the officer. Then, they will ask you to take a photo to print on your Resident Permit.
- After taking the photo, return to the officer to verify your information and receive the documents for payment.
- Bring the receipt back to the officer.
- The officer will make an appointment to pick up the passport and receive confirmation of the issuance of the Resident Permit.
- Pick up your passport, this can be done by yourself or have someone else pick it up for you, but they must have an appointment paper.
During the process of issuing a Resident Permit, the officer will ask for the passport to complete the same paperwork as when applying for a visa. During this period, the Resident Permit issuance receipt will act as your temporary identity document. It can be used to travel both domestically by plane and train, but it is not very convenient. Therefore, anyone whose Resident Permit is about to expire should plan their travel and renewal in advance.
The process usually takes about 2 weeks for the document to be issued. After returning your passport, you can entry and exit China unlimited times within the period specified on your Resident Permit.
